Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) (4)

Like all butterflies, the painted lady has two antennae on its head, two compound eyes and a mouth that is shaped like a proboscis.

The butterfly uses its antennae to detect odors, tastes and temperatures. In some butterflies, especially males, the antennae are more pronounced in order to detect pheromones from females at a great distance.
