Common Darter (Sympetrum striolatum) (2)

Yesterday’s and today’s photos clearly show the problems involved in photographing large insects: not all parts are in focus. This is particularly noticeable when working with a medium aperture (f8 to f11), which is intended to prevent plants in the background from becoming too clearly visible.

The common darter – a female is shown here – is on the wing from the end of June right through to October, or even November in a warm autumn. The adults migrate over large areas and are often seen in meadows, roads and gardens far away from water.
