The Spanish were the first Europeans to discover ‘tree dahlias’ in the 1500s, but rootstock and seed were not introduced in Spain until the 1700s. Initially, the European invaders also thought the tubers might make a good food source [as the blooms were not particularly attractive] but found them to be gummy and tasteless.
