The amusement ride Octopus is a type of fairground ride in the shape of an octopus. It made its first appearance in the UK in 1937 and is still thrilling riders today.
Five arms with cars on the end are attached to a central axis. As the arms rotate and move up and down in random, the cars are exposed to varying clockwise and counterclockwise spins, providing a g-force kick at the bottom and a weightless, floating sensation at the top.
The Octopus is a standard on the Basel Autumn Fair, and a spectacular sight when lit up and in motion.
