Hike Over the Summit of Belchen (1,414 m, Black Forest) (4)

Originally, the Black Forest consisted of beech and fir trees. Under the influence of humans, the composition of tree species has changed.

Today, around 43 percent of the Black Forest consists of spruce trees, fir trees account for 18.5 percent, and beech trees, by far the most common deciduous tree, account for over 15 percent.

In the Black Forest, conifers (spruce and fir) grow mainly at higher altitudes, while deciduous trees (beech, oak, and maple) grow predominantly at lower altitudes.
