The small, compact ruddy turnstone (Arenaria interpres) is a wading bird with bright orange legs and a black beak. Its belly is white and its upper body and head are dark brown with a rust-colored tinge.

The ruddy turnstone is a regular migrant and winter visitor to the Wadden Sea. It breeds in Scandinavia and winters in West Africa. Non-breeding young birds can also be seen in the Wadden Sea during the summer.

When foraging, the ruddy turnstone runs back and forth with the waves. It turns over stones, shells, algae, pieces of wood, and seaweed along the tide line with its beak and eats animals underneath (insects, worms, snails, and crabs).

The turnstone is trusting, so you can get close to it and watch it eat.
