Common Winter Damselfly (Sympecma fusca) (2)

The common winter damselfly is a species of damselfly in the family Lestidae. The species is primarily found in the European Mediterranean region.

The common winter damselfly prefers still waters up to one meter deep, as these warm up quickly, allowing the larvae to develop extremely rapidly. In the spring, the previous year’s generation is the first to emerge; the new generation can be observed starting around July.

When the males prepare for mating, their eyes take on a brilliant blue color, and a blue patch appears between their wings. The males display this patch to the females during mating. Otherwise, the sexes can only be distinguished by their abdominal appendages.
