Nursery Web Spider (Pisaura mirabilis) (4)

Nursery web spiders construct large, round, cream-colored egg sacs. They measure about 7 to 8 mm in diameter and hold up to 200 eggs.

Unlike wolf spiders that attach their egg sacs to their rear, nursery web spiders carry their sac underneath their bodies, tightly gripped by their fangs and mouthparts. Because the sac is so large, the mother’s legs can barely reach the ground while she walks.

While carrying the egg sac, the mother is an active hunter. She frequently rotates it or moves to the top/bottom of leaves to ensure the eggs get the optimal amount of sunlight and avoid mold
