The European peacock is a beautiful and conspicuous butterfly living in temperate grasslands and woodlands of Europe and Asia.
The markings of the peacock are unmistakable – big, colorful ‘eyes’ just like a peacock’s tail feathers. These eyespots are used to deter predators from the butterfly’s vulnerable body.
The European peacock can be seen feeding on flowers all year-round during warm spells. It overwinters as an adult in buildings or trees and may appear quite early in spring.
