Globe Artichoke (Cynara cardunculus) (6)

Today’s photo shows a mature, dried flower head of the artichoke plant. This is where the seeds are located.

If the green, edible artichoke bud is left on the plant, it blooms into a large thistle-like purple or blue flower [see yesterday’s photograph]. Once the flower dies and dries out, the seeds form at the base of the petals.
