Unlike many garden plants, cosmos thrives well in poor and lean soil. If you give it rich soil with too much fertilizer, it grows a lot of green leaves but produces very few flowers.
Cosmos flourishes best in full sun with 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. The soil must drain well. Wet, soggy soil will rot the roots.
