Hike Over the Summit of Belchen (1,414 m, Black Forest) (3)

The ancient Celts inhabited the Black Forest region, which they called ‘Abnoba Mons’ after a Celtic deity. The Belchen was part of a ‘Belchen system’ of five mountains in the border region of Germany, France, and Switzerland, which likely served as a celestial calendar. The name ‘Belchen’ is possibly derived from the Celtic sun god Belenus, and the mountain’s position was used to observe the sun.
