The Black Forest is a mountain range in Southwest Germany. It is known for its dense forest of evergreen conifers, mainly pine, spruce and fir. The green trees are standing often very close together, which makes them appear very dark. Already the Romans called this area ‘Silva Nigra’, the dark, black forest.
The ‘Feldberg’ is the highest mountain in the Black Forest [1,493 m above sea level] and also of Germany outside the Alps. In its vicinity there is a large network of posted hiking trails and several huts with indoor and outdoor restaurants. The forests are rich in blueberries and mushrooms, making the area an attractive goal for a weekend outing.
