Comma Butterfly (Polygonia c-album) (1)

The name of the comma refers to the presence of a prominent white comma-shaped marking on the underwing. The upper surface of the wings has a rich orange hue with dark brown blotches. The undersides are strikingly similar in appearance to dead leaves. Likewise, the remarkable wing shape with the scalloped edges is an attempt to use leaves as camouflage to protect the butterfly from predators.
