Silver-Washed Fritillary (Argynnis paphia) (1)

The silver-washed fritillary is one of Europe’s largest butterflies with a wingspan of about 7.5 cm. Its common name refers to the suffused silvery markings on the underside hindwings.

The butterfly is orange with an intricate pattern of black spots and lines on the upper wings. The underside of the rear wing is washed lime-green and pink, with silvery streaks running across it.

The larvae of this woodland butterfly feed on violets; adults stop regularly at nectar sources, particularly bramble and purple flowers such as thistles and knapweeds.

The butterfly was captured with my iPad camera.
