Vlieland is a Dutch North Sea island, lying in the Wadden Sea. It is one of the West Frisian Islands, located between Texel and Terschelling. Vlieland is after Schiermonnikoog the second most sparsely populated municipality in the Netherlands. The majority of the island consists of sand dunes, but there are some wooded areas and small meadows. The western part consists mainly of sand. There is one village on the island, Oost-Vlieland, a campsite and a colony of vacation homes. My family and I discovered Vlieland more than 20 years ago and have visited this car-free paradise almost every year since then. From Basel, where I live, it takes about 10 hours by train and ferry to get there.
