Indian Pokeweed (Phytolacca acinosa) (1)

Indian Pokeweed is found in the Himalayas, from Kashmir to SW China and SE Asia. It grows at altitudes of 1’500 to 3’000 m.

Indian pokeweed is a bushy, perennial herbaceous plant. It grows to a height of over 1 meter. A light green to purple stem emerges from a thickened root tuber. The green, elongated oval leaves are up to 26 cm long.

During the flowering period in summer, the small, whitish flowers appear in terminal, racemose inflorescences. These develop into green, then reddish purple to black berry-like aggregate fruits. These have a diameter of around 1 cm.
