Vlieland – A Dutch Car-Free Island in the North Sea (63)

Vlieland’s lighthouse, named Vuurduin, was built in 1877. It replaced an earlier brick tower from 1836 and was enhanced in 1909 with its distinctive upper section.

Vlieland’s lighthouse sits on the dune Vuurboetsduin, from where it offers magnificent views across the Wadden Sea and the North Sea. The lighthouse is only 18 meters high, but it is located on a dune of 36 meters.

From its visitor platform, one can see Terschelling and Texel, Vlieland’s neighboring islands. In good weather, the view from the lighthouse extends 40 to 50 kilometers in all directions.
