Small Skipper (Thymelicus sylvestris) (1)

The small skipper is a butterfly of the family Hesperiidae. It is named after its quick, darting flight habit.

The butterfly’s range includes much of Europe, north Africa and Middle East. It is typically occurring where grass has grown tall. It is often found basking on vegetation or making short buzzing flights among tall grass stems.

The common name of Thymelicus sylvestris is a reference to its small size. The adult wingspan ranges from 27 to 34 mm. The small skipper has bright orange-brown wings held with forewings angled above hind wings. Males have a thin black line through the center of their forewings.
