Snipe Fly (Rhagionidae) (1)

Rhagionidae or snipe flies are a small fly family. The common family name derives from the resemblance of their proboscis to a snipe’s beak.

Snipe flies are medium-sized to large, with slender bodies and stilt-like legs. The mouthparts are adapted for piercing. Some species are predatory; others feed on nectar.

Snipe flies are typically brown and yellow and lack bristles. The larvae are also predatory and mostly terrestrial.
