Leaf Buds and Flower Buds (1)

Leaf Buds and Flower Buds (1)

In winter – from the distance – the branches and twigs of trees and shrubs look like barren wooden structures. However, from up close you can see numerous small buds, which contain miniature versions of leaves and flowers. They already developed in late summer and autumn of the preceding year. The buds grow slowly throughout the winter and then expand rapidly when spring arrives.

Today’s photo shows twigs of a rose bush. The buds are leaf buds already well developed. We haven’t had many days below freezing this winter. Currently, it feels more like spring will be here soon.
