Wall Lizard (Podarcis muralis) (6)

The mating ritual of the wall lizard is a complex and often violent process. The mating season lasts from April through the end of May. Males actively seek out females and court them. The female signals her readiness to mate by nodding her head, twitching her tail, or making rhythmic movements with her front legs.

As part of the ritual, the male seizes the female by biting her tail or flank. The male’s bite then usually shifts to the neck or side region in front of the hind legs, while the male arches his body to bring the genitalia together.

The actual mating lasts 30 to 40 minutes. After fertilization, the females lay their eggs about 30 days later in loose soil or in cracks in walls.
