Common Cockchafer (Melolontha melolontha) (4)

Common Cockchafer (Melolontha melolontha) (4)

The antennae of common cockchafers are equipped with smell sensors and, thus, form the nose of the beetle. Female cockchafers have antennae with six small leaf-like plates [see today’s photo], whereas males have seven larger leaf-like plates [will be shown tomorrow].

The photos of today and tomorrow are from my archive. They were also taken in the Kaiserstuhl but a few years ago.
