Seven-Spot Ladybird (Coccinella septempunctata) (1)

The seven-spotted ladybug – scientifically known as Coccinella septempunctata – is a very popular good-luck charm. It is six to eight millimeters long and is most easily recognized by its jet-black head. It also has red elytra and, as its name suggests, seven black spots.

A cheerful beetle with a vicious appetite, the 7-spot is our most familiar ladybird. Both adults and larvae feed predominantly on aphids. They are common in woods, parks and hedgerows, and a welcome pest control in gardens.
