Nursery Web Spider (Pisaura mirabilis) (3)

The female nursery web spider lays her fertilized eggs in a 1-cm-wide egg sac, which she carries around with her chelicerae. She only occasionally sets it down to feed, retrieving it later.

Chelicerae are the specialized, jointed front mouthparts found in a group of arthropods, including spiders. Located directly in front of the mouth, they are used for grasping, tearing, or injecting venom into prey.]

The photo of the female nursery web spider with an egg sac was taken in our garden a few days ago.
